Development of Adhesives and thermally conductive Materials for the Automotive Industry, DuPont
“We develop single-component and two-component products with a high thermal conductivity of 2 to 3 W/mK. Large quantities of fillers are needed to achieve these values. The especially low viscosity of these products allows quick and easy application and a productive joining process with low wear on equipment. With an open time of more than 60 minutes before the components are joined, our materials are highly flexible. In addition, robust resistance to ageing is important: the thermal and electrical properties of the compound must not change over the course of time. Thanks to low tensile strength, individual modules can be removed for later repairs. All these aspects are taken into consideration in the development of new products.
Especially in view of the growing number of cars produced, it is important for these thermally conductive materials to be applied quickly and efficiently. The joining stage, in which the material is pressed against the battery module, must be completed in a short cycle time. This calls for low viscosity and good rheological properties as well as harmonization with the application system.
