Three modules, one goal

The optimization of tightening processes can be divided into stages which are based on our customers’ processes from development and planning through to serial production: 

  1. The detailed design and assessment of appropriate tightening strategies and the design of tightening operations in connection with the development of new parameters or changes in existing parameters
  2. The optimization of tightening strategies and associated tightening parameters in combination with the introduction of products to new or existing production lines
  3. Quality assurance for existing tightening processes and also the release of new tightening operations on the production line

In the ideal case, our specialists are already involved at an early stage in order to lay the foundation for high-quality joints with targeted planning support. We can either provide a full scope of services on the basis of our experience and competence or supplement the existing know-how and resources of our customers, for example for the implementation of new assembly concepts on the basis of the applicable codes and standards and the consideration of economic aspects. This way, production is set on the right course from the start and cost risks are reduced. In the introduction phase of new projects, things may become difficult when theoretical considerations are transferred to practice. Frequently, the result is an increase in the amount of reworking required. In addition, it is extremely important to set the correct cycle time for the line and to choose the right tools. The objective must be to make processes efficient and to achieve high productivity. The production of a manual can help in supporting the implementation of standardized assembly processes.

Industrial tightening systems – a complex topic

However, in most cases, our specialists are only called in at the final stage of a planning process, when production has already started and quality deviations have caused severe problems. Product liability can be extremely expensive. If tightening processes are not correctly designed and implemented, the results may include recall campaigns, warranty claims and high reworking expenses. Our goal is to protect our customers against these problems. On the basis of these three cornerstones, Atlas Copco offers a variety of production optimization modules. For example, the use of torque-controlled tightening procedures leads to a risk that tightening errors may not be detected. An analysis of tightening data can provide information on the optimum monitoring limits. Additional angle monitoring can also help to detect stripped threads, material problems and operator errors.

During a tightening analysis, factors such as friction factor, clamping force, failure limits and relaxation behaviour are analysed on the basis of production parts and the ideal tightening procedure is identified. This approach is also highly effective for assessing component quality in connection with the selection of suppliers. Atlas Copco carries out these measurements and analyses at its own tightening laboratory, ensuring that all orders are kept confidential. In addition, we transfer our know-how to customers through seminars and practical workshops connected with tightening systems, allowing them to develop their own skills in the long term. Irrespective of which industrial sector is concerned, assembly with screws, bolts and threads is still the most commonly used joining technology. Under the applicable codes and standards, manufacturers are under an obligation to classify their tightening operations and to design their production in accordance with these requirements.
